Surviving Managed Care

Getting the health care you deserve

"Surviving Managed Care," a special report of the Salem Evening News, is meant to help you manage your health care without being mismanaged by the system. Whether you're already in an HMO or wondering about joining one, we'll show you how to make them work for you.

And there's a lot to learn.

We'll explore the ethical dilemma doctors face in signing contracts to be paid by HMOs. We'll show you how managed care has influenced the way they take care of people.

We'll introduce you to HMO members who have learned the hard way what it takes to navigate the managed care system. We'll also tell you how to find a good HMO and a responsive primary-care physician, and we'll show you how to fight when all else fails.

Plus, we'll delve into what many agree is the best thing about HMOs -- preventive care -- and we'll learn what lawmakers are doing about some of the problems.

In the end, our goal is to give you the information you need to make good decisions within the managed care system today and prepare you for some of the changes coming in the future.

These stories were originally published May 21, 22 and 23 in the Salem Evening News and the Daily News of Newburyport. The series was published May 28, 29 and 30 in the Gloucester Daily Times. The three newspapers are published by Essex County Newspapers in Beverly, Mass.
