A stone and brick manor house on a 230-acre farm, highlighting the area’s rich farming heritage. It features historic furnishings and excavated artifacts. This saltbox dwelling illustrates the development of New England’s timber-frame architecture and building practices over two centuries, including one of the largest kitchen hearths in New England. NEWBURYPORT Courthouse (1805), High Street, facing Green Street. The courthouse was designed by the renowned colonial architect Charles Bullfinch and constructed in 1805. Superior Court sessions are held there. It is the oldest working courthouse in the country. Cushing House Museum (1808), 98 High St., 978-462-2681. A National Historic Landmark. This 21-room brick mansion is the home of the Historical Society of Old Newbury. It includes exhibits of antique dolls, glassware, silver, furnishings and portraits that were representative of Newburyport’s past. Tours, Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays, beginning in June, noon-4 p.m. Last tour begins one hour before closing. Admission charge. Newburyport Maritime Society, 25 Water St., 978-462-8681. The museum is maintained by the Newburyport Maritime Society and is housed in the restored 1835 granite Custom House designed by noted Washington Monument architect Robert Mills. Newburyport Public Library, 94 State St., 978-465-4428. This was originally the home of Nathaniel Tracy. This brick mansion was visited by George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. In 1865 it became a public library and can be visited during library hours. ROWLEY Platts-Bradstreet House, (circa 1677), 233 Main St. (Route 1A), 978-948-7483. Owned by Rowley Historical Society. Built before 1677 by Samuel Platts Sr. on land granted, in 1639, to William Bellingham. In 1770 it passed into the hands of the Bradstreet family. Tours by appointment only. SALISBURY Pike School (1882), Corner of Route 1 and Route 110, 978-465-5546. Salisbury Historical Society Museum, Elm Street. Built in the early 1800s, the building was known as the East Parish House for centuries, and up until December 2001 it was home to the ministers of the East Parish Church. The society plans to renovate the house, erect an old, recently disassembled, Salisbury barn, and move an original railroad station to the property. Salisbury Town Hall (1893), Salisbury Square. WEST NEWBURY West Newbury Historical Society, corner of Main and Bachelor Streets, 978-363-1105. The house was built by William Hills in 1780. NATURE CENTERS Joppa Flats Education Center, Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport. The center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. The center is closed on Mondays and the first week of July. Summer activities include bird watching, kayaking, out-of-state trips, and special programs for families, schools and seniors. Odiorne Point State Park and Seacoast Science Center, Route 1A, Rye, N.H. The Seacoast Science Center has exhibits relating to the natural and cultural history of Odiorne and the seacoast area. Interpretive programs by the Seacoast Center naturalist are of special interest to naturalists, botanists and students of marine life. Many trails and a wooded seaside picnic areas are handicapped accessible. The center, located on the grounds of Odiorne Point State Park, offers year-round programs including naturalist guided or unguided explorer programs for schools, visitor programs on the natural and social history of Odiorne Point and the Gulf of Maine, as well as a variety of indoor exhibits highlighting some of the fascinating features of coastal New Hampshire. Parks AMESBURY Alliance Park, at the junction of the Powow and Merrimack rivers. A marker notes the building of the Frigate Alliance, one of America’s first commissioned war vessels. It participated in many spectacular battles and at one time served as flagship for John Paul Jones. Amesbury Town Park, located between Friend Street and Highland Park. Features baseball diamonds, swings, playground structures and a new skateboard park. Millyard Park, the center of the historic textile mill complex in downtown Amesbury. Self-guided walking tour, waterfall. Occasional concerts and other entertainment. “Po Hill,” Powow Hill overlooks the town of Amesbury and is commonly called “Po Hill” by Amesbury residents. With an elevation of 332 feet, it is the highest point in Essex County. The hill’s name originates in the belief that it was the location for Indian ceremonial meetings or “powwows.” Woodsom Farm, Lion’s Mouth Road. It features a large expanse of open space and is a popular area for sledding in the winter and soccer in the summer. Other activities include kite flying, model rocket launching and astronomical observing. Georgetown-Rowley State Forest, Route 133, Georgetown. Features include hiking, marked trails, horseback riding, hunting, bicycling, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. This is a part of Bradley Palmer State Park. GROVELAND River Pines Park, Route 113, on the Merrimack River. NEWBURY Lower Green, off High Road (Route 1A), near the Parker River. Upper Green, off High Road (Route 1A), across from the Town Hall, at the Duck Pond. Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and Sandy Point Reservation, off Plum Island Turnpike, 978-465-5753. Seven-mile drive through one of the few natural barrier beach-dune-salt marsh complexes left on the Northeast coast. Wildlife observation, nature trails, hunting and surf fishing. Refuge beach is closed in April of each year to protect the nesting plovers. Call for information on reopening date. Admission charge. Old Town Hill Reservation, off Newman Road. Offers panoramic view of salt marshes and coast. Picnicking, hiking, birdwatching, canoeing and kayaking are available. Open year round sunrise to sunset. No charge. NEWBURYPORT Atkinson Common, High Street at Moseley Avenue. The park was a gift to the city in 1873, in memory of Matthias Atkinson. A beautiful spot to relax and view the “Volunteer” statue by Kitson. Atwood Street Park, Atwood Street and School Streets. Basketball, tennis courts, and open space. Bartlett Mall, High Street between State and Green Streets. Site of the old County Court House, now the Superior Court House, designed by Charles Bullfinch in 1805. It sits in front of the glacier-formed frog pond which features a fountain in its center. Brown Square, Pleasant Street. Contains a statue of abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. Cashman Park, between Boardman and Water streets. Cushing Park, Buck and Congress Streets. Features a new playground and a basketball court. Hale Park, Water Street. Privately owned, open to the public from dawn to dusk. Lovely landscaping and spectacular river views. Joppa Park, opposite Hale Park on Water Street. Views of the harbor along the seawall. Market Landing Park, Located downtown behind the Firehouse Center. It leads to the newly restored Boardwalk, site of waterfront summer concerts and activities. Maudslay State Park, Curzon’s Mill Road, 978-465-7223. Features a 480-acre park, formerly the Moseley Estate, with 19th century gardens and plantings, rolling meadows, towering pine forests, and one of the largest naturally occurring stands of mountain laurel in eastern Massachusetts. Open year-round, daily, 8 a.m.-sunset. $2 parking fee. Seasonal outdoor theater/music performances, 978-465-7225. Moseley Pines, crossroads of Moseley Avenue, Spofford and Merrimac streets. Was a generous gift of Charles W. Moseley. It overlooks the Merrimack River and provides fireplaces for cookouts, tennis courts, walking trails, a roofed pavilion, and playground. Newburyport Skatepark, R.A.N. Middle School, Low Street. Designed to accomodate many levels of ability from beginner to expert. Waterfront Park and Promenade Riverfront, located off Merrimac Street. Its 2,000 feet of river frontage is available for recreational activities. Both the park and boardwalk provide a peaceful and relaxing place for strolling or boatwatching. During the week-long Yankee Homecoming event (July 26-August 3) many events take place along the waterfront, including nightly outdoor concerts. Docking facilities are open to the public. SALISBURY Salisbury Beach State Reservation, located on Reservation Road off Route 1A, 978-462-4481.
