NEWBURY

46 High Road A Bed & Breakfast, 46 High Road. (Route 1A), 978-462-4664. This typical New England farmhouse has been in one family since 1863. The owner has lived in the house all of his life. A naturalist, he is familiar with the many waterways in the area. There are two rooms available for guests. One of the available rooms has a four-poster double bed for $90 per night, while the other room features a queen-sized bed for $95 per night. A “wicked good” complimentary breakfast is included. Blue (formerly Walton’s Ocean Front) 20 Fordham Way, Plum Island, 978-465-7171. Located on a beautiful sandy beach next to seven miles of deserted sand dunes and more than 4,000 acres of the wildlife refuge. The only hotel on Plum Island, it is just three miles from Newburyport. Accommodations include overnight rooms and one-bedroom suites. All units have private baths. Call for rates and reservations. MasterCard, Visa and American Express accepted.

NEWBURYPORT

This charming bed and breakfast is located just one block from the downtown area and three blocks from the waterfront. A classic Federalist home built in 1803, the eight rooms are furnished with antiques and have private baths and air conditioning. There are formal gardens and common rooms. Tea served in the afternoons; sherry served in the evenings in the library. Includes a continental “plus” breakfast. Reservations recommended. Rates range from $135-$185 (plus tax), per night, double occupancy. Children, 10 and over, are welcome. All major credit cards accepted.

Located in the center of historic downtown Newburyport, it is an old inn, with 19 rooms, just steps away from many charming restaurants and Newburyport’s famous waterfront. The inn has central air-conditioning throughout. The one- and two-room suites have antique furnishings and private baths. There are 24 rooms with private baths, antique reproduction furniture, cable TV and HBO. A handicapped room is also available. Suites have lofts with spiral or colonial staircases. The rates start at $140 per night, plus tax, for a single queen, two queens or two doubles; suites with spiral staircases are $160 per night, plus tax; suites with colonial staircases and working fireplaces are $280 per night, plus tax. These historic houses, located downtown near the waterfront, were converted to a residential inn several years ago. The furnished apartment suites have kitchen facilities. Ideal for an extended stay. Weekly or monthly rentals available. Call for rates.

Morrill Place (B&B), 209 High St., 978-462-2808 or 1-888-594-4667. Built in 1806, this historical estate has nine guest rooms furnished to the period. All guests have use of the library, music room, porch and terrace. Afternoon tea is also served. Pets allowed. Recommended for children 12 and over. Continental breakfast included. Newburyport Bed & Breakfast, 296 High St., 978-463-4637. Experience the gracious formal elegance of a by-gone era that is captured and preserved in this magnificent turn-of-the-century Georgian Colonial. This 1901 colonial was built by local newspaper publisher and cofounder, Fred E. Smith, as a present for his bride. Graced with outstanding architectural features and fine craftsmanship, this home sits on a superbly landscaped acre of land with English gardens, carriage house, manicured lawn and magnificent trees and shrubbery. The third-floor loft features a queen bed, private bathroom with shower, air conditioning, mini-refrigerator, color TV with VCR, telephone, and private outdoor balcony overlooking the gardens at $130/double occupancy. Innkeepers, Lord and Lady John and Judith Harris of Penrhyn. Built in 1786 as a ship’s chandlery/residence, it combines Yankee hospitality and the English tradition of bed and breakfast. Four guest rooms, with private baths, give a glimpse at inn keeping as it used to be. Rates include full traditional English breakfast, afternoon tea and service charge. Call for reservations. $165 per night, plus tax, double occupancy. The rates for one person are $130 mid-week only, plus tax, and $165, plus tax, on weekends and holidays. ROWLEY

SALISBURY

This inn has 21 rooms, including three suites on the Merrimack River overlooking Newburyport harbor. There is a full service restaurant and bar on the premises. A function room is also available.

NEW HAMPSHIRE
