Toe tapping fun at community bandstandIt’s all music, all the time, again this summer at the West Newbury Community Bandstand, with thirteen straight weeks of mixed entertainment that’s sure to please everyone. Come on down with your family and friends and treat yourselves to a night out. Food cooked fresh on the grill by members of the fire department, and cold beverages are available throughout the evening. The shows start promptly at 6:30 p.m. and run until 8 p.m.. Bring your own chairs and find a spot to enjoy the show! June 3rd began in traditional fashion with West Newbury’s own Concert Band. On June 10th, the 3rd Annual Pentucket Youth Jam gets the gazebo rocking. The three top bands from a recent Pentucket High School Battle of the Bands will share the stage. The bands featured are The Drop Antenna, Jonathan’s Distortion and Pointcenter. The energy will be high that evening, so don’t miss it! Things take an Irish twist on June 17th with the Celtic rock band, Beyond The Pale. This local group of musicians has two CDs and has been playing in the area for a number of years. They are bound to have you up and out of your chairs. Rounding out the month on June 24th is The Incredible Moonlight Surfers. This classic rock band features locally known artists Dick Kaplan, E.J. Oullette and Jeff Philcrantz. It’s a combination you don’t want to miss. July 1st kicks off with Sleepy LaBeef. Sleepy is back by popular demand and he promises to get to the right bandstand this year. We’ll keep a close eye on him and maybe get him a police escort! His legendary country and rockabilly music will have the place hopping. This is a special show that will start at 6 p.m., so we can hear Sleepy for two full hours. Make it a party and come early. TMWB, a local party band, will return on July 8th to entertain with everything from Elvis to Hank Williams. The kids are invited on stage and several friends of the band will perform throughout the evening. This is homegrown music at its best! The legendary folksinger, Bill Staines is back for his 3rd straight year on July 15th. Bill has attracted some of our largest audiences and is known all over the world on the folk circuit. He loves to play in our backyard gazebo. July 22nd and 29th is all jazz. The Nick Goumas Quartet will play the classics on the 22nd and The Mark Marquis Group will mix it up on the 29th. When Mark played here two years ago, people near the bandstand left their gardening duties and hustled down to the show when they heard his sound! Aug. 5th brings back one of the original Pentucket Youth Jam’s performers. Beef Wellington Dynasty just keeps getting better with age and they are anxious to demonstrate their progress to everyone. Yankee Notions, a traditional folk duo returns to sing old songs and tell stories that are both educational and fun. August 19th brings a friend of TMWB to the stage for his own performance. Newburyport resident John Curtis, formerly a member of the Poussette Dart Band and The Pencils, will perform an impressive mix of originals and covers. His musicianship is phenomenal and his ability bring out the best in others is his strength. Look for him to have a few surprises up his sleeve that evening. The West Newbury Concert Band will wind up the summer in traditional fashion on August 26th. They provide a great night of entertainment, but saying goodbye to summer will be hard to do. Please mark your calendars and come and see us at the bandstand. It’s the place to be every Thursday evening in beautiful downtown West Newbury. See you there!
